Component Design Engineer in East Aurora, NY #4916AS

Description:
Recruiter to Contact: Adam Salazar
Job Title: Design Engineer
Job Number: 4916
Location: East Aurora, NY
Compensation: DOE
Assignment Length: 12 Month
2 openings

GENERAL FUNCTION:

This position is responsible for development of complex electrohydraulic, electromechanical, mechanical, hydromechanical and electropneumatic components and systems that will become the new products of Moog, Inc. The incumbent, a fully trained professional, plans and conducts efforts requiring judgment in the independent evaluation, selection, and substantial adaptation and modification of standard engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria. Typically, the Design Engineer devises new approaches for the problems encountered.

DIMENSIONS:

Expected annual production sales from projects: $4M to $10M

NATURE AND SCOPE:

A variety of technical functions exist within the Design/Development Engineering Department. Reporting to the division's Chief Engineer typically are Associate Engineers, Development Engineers, Design and Project Engineers, Senior Design and Senior Project Engineers, Senior Staff Engineers, and Principal Engineers, as well as Engineering Managers, Section Heads or Group Leaders. The Design Engineer typically reports to an Engineering Manager, Section Head or Group Leader within the department and on demanding projects he/she might work under the leadership of a Senior Design Engineer. The incumbent receives instructions on specific assignment objectives, complex features, and possible solutions. He/She is expected to make independent and unreviewed decisions on routine technical matters. However, assistance is furnished on unusual problems and work is periodically reviewed for application of sound professional judgment.

The Design Engineer is a key contributor to the analysis, conceptual design, development, and testing of complex control hardware used on military, commercial and NASA vehicles and equipment. The products of Moog generally are unique for each customer. Therefore, most new applications require a special, tailored design, even though adaptation of existing designs always should be considered where appropriate. The Design Engineer generally will operate as part of a design/development team, which includes other Department engineers with his/her primary concern being component design. The incumbent must effectively coordinate the work of drafters, technicians, and others who assist in specific assignments.

In the early stages of a new program, the project team will consult with the customer, establish the problem statement, conceive of potential hardware solutions to the problem, often through extensive trade studies, and then create a successful technical proposal. This phase is critical in that it establishes the basis for future design, and for contract negotiations. Under the technical direction of the Engineering Manager, Section Head or the team's lead engineer, the Design Engineer will then guide the evolution of the conceptual design, technical project planning, detail design, and development testing. This requires some travel and the participation in presentations to customers.

The Design Engineer will apply creative skills to generate designs that fulfill the conflicting requirements of meeting performance goals, robustness over extreme conditions, minimum weight, awkward envelopes, and cost effectiveness. Successful mechanical designs require judicious material selection, effective use of stress analysis, and sometimes design of unique kinematic mechanisms. Successful electrical designs require intelligent component selection and effective use of thermal stress analysis. Circuit designs must be reliable and make optimal use of available space.

To be considered for the position of Design Engineer, a candidate should have a minimum of an MS Degree, preferably in Mechanical, Aeronautical or Electrical Engineering plus three years of design/development engineering experience. As an alternative, the candidate would have a BS Degree plus six years minimum of design/development engineering experience. To fulfill the demands of design and development of new products the individual must have self-starting instincts and strong analytical skills. A Mechanical Design Engineer should have a good sense of three dimensional spatial orientation and seasoned knowledge of mechanical hardware design. An Electrical Design Engineer should have solid knowledge of circuit design and a wide range of electrical components.

Basic knowledge of closed loop control systems and good communication skills is also necessary.

ACCOUNTABILITIES:

1. Contribute to the development of new product requirements through consulting with customers and sales personnel.

2. Validate conceptual problem solutions by performing trade studies and analyses.

3. Be a key contributor to the preparation of successful proposal designs, cost estimates, and technical volume write ups.

4. Operate as a key element in a team of creative, independent individuals.

5. Represent Moog in a manner consistent with its technical reputation.

6. Create reliable designs through a comprehensive experimental development test program.

7. Document designs, analyses, and test results with accurate and concise repo
