Flight Controls and Simulation Engineer

Description:
As a Flight Controls and Simulation Engineer, your role will be to design and implement flight control, estimation, and simulation software for an unconventional autonomous vehicle. You will be involved in all stages of development — from dynamic modeling and sub-scale testing, to designing complex control systems, analyzing their robustness and performance, and validating them in simulation and on full-scale aircraft.

You have a passion for self-piloted aircraft. You have an in-depth understanding of fixed-wing and rotorcraft flight dynamics, and of classical and modern flight control techniques.  You have designed, analyzed, implemented, and tested complex — yet elegant — multi-level controller architectures, and successfully deployed them in the real world. You have built high-fidelity 6DOF simulations for software-in-the-loop and hardware-in-the-loop testing.
You have a strong mathematical background, with an emphasis on linear algebra, estimation, and optimization. You have used your talents in applied control theory to contribute meaningfully to the design, analysis, and flight testing of one or more operational aircraft. You are familiar with model-based design techniques, and how they are deployed within the constraints of safety-critical embedded systems. You have working familiarity with the principles of software engineering, and have some experience with application level software deployment, testing, and debugging.

As our projects are “out-of-the-box” by design, you will be expected to seek, investigate, and implement creative solutions to challenges and impediments, and skillfully pivot when needed, with minimum loss of momentum. We expect you to do this with equal parts technical intuition and rigorous by-the-book protocol.

To get specific, your responsibilities will be to:
Design and implement flight control, navigation, guidance, estimation, and simulation software for unconventional aircraft
Effectively communicate your designs, analysis, and engineering intent with the rest of the engineering team and partners
Assist the engineering and flight testing team as required
Make a lasting contribution to the social environment at the company by participating in social events and proposing new ones, sharing your passions and hobbies, and spreading joy wherever you go

We expect that you will have:
A Master’s or Doctorate degree in Aeronautical, Mechanical, Electrical, or Software Engineering
At least five years of progressively ambitious experience in the area of vehicle dynamics, controls, and simulation
Expert level knowledge of MATLAB, Simulink, and associated workflows
Experience with C, C++, or another compiled/systems language and Python or another interpreted language
Experience with typical airborne sensors: IMUs, GPS, Air Data, Lidar, etc
A strong mathematical background
Excellent communication skills
An aptitude for working in small teams, with the ability to take a leading role in your area(s) of specialty and readiness to work across disciplines where appropriate
