Designer 3- structural

Description:
Designs components or portions of systems and modifies existing designs to develop or improve products and facilitate manufacturing operations. Utilizes computer-aided design equipment and/or graphic tools such as, CAD, CAM or CATIA. Gathers information, makes studies, computes calculations, and prepares original rough layouts, sketches to present design proposal. Coordinates design criteria with engineering, manufacturing, tooling, material, and planning group such as ease of manufacture, availability of materials, and contractual specifications. Exclude classifications in which incumbents predominantly perform drafting assignments.

Full Considerable knowledge of the job. Complete acquaintance with and understanding of the general and detailed aspects of the job, and their practical applications to problems and situations ordinarily encountered.

Supervision Given and Received
Limited supervision. No instructions needed on routine work, and general instructions given on new lines of work or special assignments.

Typical Duties and Tasks
Duties & tasks are varied and moderately complex. Resolves most questions and problems, and refers complex questions to higher levels.

Consequence of Errors
Errors may be difficult to detect and would normally result in loss of customer business, material, or equipment to resolve.

Contacts
Contacts are frequent with individuals representing other departments, and/or representing outside organizations. Contacts involve obtaining or providing information or data on matters of moderate importance to the function of the department or which may be of sensitive nature.

Basic Qualifications
Associate's or other 2 year technical degree in related discipline and 3 years of related experience.
Creation of electronic drawings for submarine structural systems. Will perform specification trade studies and prepare arrangement recommendations for the design of structural systems in support of the Columbia Class submarine program.
Candidates submitted must have experience in the following areas:
• Strong 3D Modeling Skills and 3D spatial awareness;
• Knowledge in GD&T;
• Understanding of welding as it applies to the development of structural systems and components;
• Capable of interfacing with Engineering to understand design requirements of various structural systems and lead other designers in the development of these systems to meet the requirements; and
• Coordinate discussions and incorporate design aspects with manufacturing, tooling, materials and planning trades.
1st Shift (7:30 to 4:00), Lunch is 12:00 to 12:30. 10%-15% overtime encouraged.
Confidential clearance highly desired
Some driving into the yard (i.e. inside the gates) to discuss construction needs may be required, but employee will typically take the NNS Shuttle Van or our department vehicle.
Some travel may be required, but it will be infrequent (2 or 3 times/year).
