Butler Aerospace & Defense is seeking an experienced component maintenance manual (CMM) technical writer to work off-site at the client’s location in Vermont. The duration of the project is a minimum of one year. The writer’s will be managed directly by the client.

Areas of Responsibility/Essential Functions

• Under general direction and according to standard practice, the technical writer works independently on the analysis, organization, and writing of (avionic) CMMs.
• Develop concise, complete, technically accurate, and easy to understand technical information in a timely fashion with a very high level of quality.
• Research, writing, and revision/creation of (avionic) CMMs according to the governing specification and published standard work.
• Develop and coordinate the revision/creation of technical illustrations with illustrators on form and content of illustrations in support of aircraft maintenance publications.
• Interface with engineers over the content and review of the publications when required.
• Exercise initiative and judgment in carrying out detail writing assignments working from engineering drawings, specifications, performance data, or other similar literature. Judgment required compiling and selecting technical data for text and illustrations.
• Provide frequent status to supervision.
• Meet established internal and external delivery milestones.

Technical Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:

• Ability to write (avionic) CMM procedures from engineering drawings, specifications, performance data, or other similar literature.
• Ability to dissect complex and interdependent processes into discrete and detailed steps to enhance end-users’ ability to understand and follow the directions.
• Proficient with desktop publishing using content management and publishing software.
• Proficient with SGML/XML structured document authoring such as Arbortext or equivalent.
• Proficient with various research (i.e., customer-specific) applications for technical issues.
• Strong computer skills with a working knowledge of Adobe Acrobat and Microsoft Office.
• Ability to read and interpret assembly/installation blueprints, technical publications, vendor data, and various forms of engineering data.
• Ability to read and interpret military and commercial specification and standards.

• Preferred, but not required:
- Aircraft mechanical, and avionic aptitude and the ability to apply this knowledge to create accurate and complex technical procedures

Required Education/Qualifications:

Work Environment:
This position operates in a professional office environment.
This position routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, printers, and fax machines.
Limited travel maybe required to support validations.
This is a full-time Exempt position requiring a 40-hour work week.
Occasional overtime and possible weekend work are also required to meet customers’ needs.

Plans, implements, tests, documents, and maintains solutions for the integration and testing of in-house developed and COTS/GOTS components, elements, subsystems and/or systems. Synthesizes customer contractual needs and requirements into system test solutions that acknowledge technical, schedule and cost constraints. Establishes functional and technical specifications and standards, solves hardware/software interface problems, defines input/output parameters, and ensures integration of the entire system or subsystem. Reviews, evaluates and derives requirements for testability, develops and directs preparation and execution of comprehensive test plans, procedures and schedules for complete systems and/or subsystems. Coordinates subsystem and/or system testing activities with programs and other organizations. Performs analysis of test results and prepares comprehensive subsystem and/or system level evaluation reports which verify and validate system performance. Writes discrepancy reports and performs integration regression testing to verify/validate incorporated fixes to software, components, subsystems and systems.

Basic Minimum Required Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college in a related discipline (Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science or related field of study or related professional level career experience)
• 5+ years experience using Microsoft Office products to generate status reports, project plans, and work instructions.
• 5+ years experience writing, editing and supporting existing software code base using LabVIEW
• 3+ years experience writing, editing and supporting existing software code base using Test Stand software.
• 3+ years experience in analyzing and resolving problems.
• Experience in managing and prioritizing your own workload that may consist of several tasks at once.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Experience in effectively working on teams.
• Ability to work with minimal detailed direction to deliver desired results.

Desired (nice to have) Qualifications:
• A minimum of 9 years of professional level career experience is preferred.
• Proven success in implementing appropriate methods to measure electrical parameters typically required for components and subassemblies.
• 5+ years subject matter expert in Radio Frequency or Microwave systems and subsystems.
• 3+ years success in developing multiple complex test programs with Test Stand development environments.
• Proven track record of researching and specifying components for test equipment design.
• Proven ability in troubleshooting measurement issues and isolating problems down to the test instrument, fixturing, software level or unit under test.

The engineer who fills this position must have systems, development, troubleshooting and problem solving skills. The primary software languages used are Visual Basic (VB6
and VB.net) and LabView on multi-rack test stations. Typical test stations include components such as switch systems, signal generators, spectrum analyzers, oscilloscopes, DMM's, power supplies and other RF or digital related equipment. This
position also requires development and support of Environmental Stress Screening (thermal and vibration)test equipment and software suites.
Typical responsibilities
