PDS Tech Commercial is partnering with a leader in the aerospace industry to hire a Systems Engineer (Linux Systems Administrator) in Annapolis, MD. As a Systems Engineer supporting Connected Aviation Solutions, you will help power a global messaging network that serves over 1,500 aviation customers and transmits more than 75 million messages per day. Your expertise will ensure the reliability, security, and performance of mission-critical systems that keep the aviation industry moving safely and efficiently.
This is a full-time, 6-month consultant opportunity with a hybrid schedule (4 days onsite, 1 remote) based in Annapolis, MD. Pay ranges from $50.21 to $56.51 per hour.
In this role, you will:
Sustain and maintain core Linux servers within a bare metal infrastructure environment
Administer system-level procedures including patch management, certificate management, redundancy management, and service layer applications
Install, configure, test, upgrade, and support system software
Perform automated and manual backup and recovery processes
Monitor systems, troubleshoot hardware/software/connectivity issues, and contribute to Root Cause Analysis (RCA)
Optimize system configurations to enhance performance and enforce security best practices
Collaborate with developers to support containerization initiatives and continuous integration efforts
Deploy new systems across multiple data centers, including racking and cabling equipment (must be able to lift up to 40 lbs.)
Support global data center operations and occasional off-hours tasks or meetings
Help transition customers to next-generation platforms and services
Bachelor’s degree in STEM and minimum 3 years of relevant experience; OR Advanced Degree with 2 years of experience; OR 7 years of relevant experience without a degree
Strong experience with Linux CLI, debugging tools, and network stack
Hands-on administration of multiple Linux distributions (RHEL, Ubuntu)
Working knowledge of core networking concepts including subnetting, firewalls, and routing
Experience troubleshooting hardware, software, and connectivity issues
Ability to create shell scripts and utility programs
Strong ability to multitask, prioritize, and meet competing deadlines
Comfortable working independently within international, cross-functional teams
This position requires use of information or access to facilities subject to the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) and/or Export Administration Regulations (EAR). These regulations may limit access of controlled technologies: 1) to U.S. Persons, including U.S. Citizens, lawful permanent residents, and other narrow categories including refugees and asylees, or 2) to certain foreign nationals that have received an export license.
Ability to support a hybrid schedule (primarily onsite in Annapolis, MD)
Experience with IBM MQ
Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, and containerization
Familiarity with storage appliances (TrueNAS, FreeNAS) and NAS/iSCSI protocols
Experience with Solaris and ZFS
Experience using configuration management systems (Git preferred)
Ability to participate in a 24x7 rotating on-call schedule
Willingness to travel occasionally (less than 20 days per year)
Note: Backgrounds strictly focused on Database Administration, Networking Administration, or Windows Administration are not transferable for this role.
