System Safety Assessment (SSA) Expert

Description:
Job Summary

Currently seeking a System Safety Assessment (SSA) Expert with deep expertise in system safety, reliability, and FAA certification. The candidate will serve as the in-house Subject Matter Expert (SME) for safety assessments, guiding the development of safety-related documentation and certification activities across aircraft, systems, and components.

This role blends technical safety leadership, certification coordination, and cross-functional collaboration with engineering teams, suppliers, DERs, and the FAA. It is ideally suited for an engineer with direct experience applying ARP4754B, ARP4761A, and 14 CFR Part 23/25 regulations, who can understand complex aircraft systems and failure modes and translate them into actionable safety requirements and compliance artifacts.

System Safety Expertise:

Serve as in-house SME for all aspects of the system safety assessment process.
Lead the creation, review, approval, and FAA coordination of safety documents including FHA, PSSA, SSA, FTA, CCA, PRA, ZSA, CMA/FMEA/FMECA, and supporting compliance documentation.
Revise existing safety assessments to support design modifications.
Participate in developing and reviewing functional architecture, ensuring proper functional decomposition, independence, and traceability to safety requirements for the aircraft, systems, and equipment.
Ensure safety objectives are incorporated into the aircraft and the associated Instructions for Continued Airworthiness (ICA).
Certification Planning, Documentation, and Coordination:

Develop and maintain the System Safety Plan and support the creation of PSCPs.
Define and track Development Assurance Levels (DALs) for software and hardware; ensure compliance through redundancy, separation, and independence in design.
Track and validate safety assumptions and results to ensure traceability and compliance.
Act as primary liaison with FAA, DERs, and certification authorities on safety-related activities.
Reliability and Risk Management:

Align system design and architecture with safety and reliability targets, ensuring objectives are met via redundancy, separation, and independence.
Apply reliability prediction methods and tools, such as MIL-HDBK-217, NPRD, and other applicable standards/databases to support safety and reliability objectives.
Ensure early identification and mitigation of system architecture issues and latent failure risks.
Product Lifecycle and Tools:

Manage and track safety documentation deliverables using Teamcenter, Jira, and Confluence.
Leverage MBSE tools and methodologies, including Siemens Polarion, ANSYS Medini, and ANSYS SCADE, to document and approve safety requirements.
Support design teams in capturing and tracing safety requirements and compliance analyses.
Leadership and Mentoring:

Provide technical guidance and mentorship to engineering teams on safety assessment methodologies, processes, and best practices.
Collaborate with engineering teams and suppliers to align safety objectives with system design.
Contribute to continuous improvement of company safety assessment processes, tools, and methods.
Support project teams in developing schedules and milestones related to safety deliverables.

Experience:

Minimum of 10 years’ experience in aerospace system safety assessment for Part 23 or Part 25 certification programs.
In-depth knowledge of ARP4754B, ARP4761A, and FAA certification processes.
Demonstrated experience creating, reviewing, and achieving FAA approval of safety documentation involving direct coordination with DERs and FAA representatives.

Proven expertise in Failure Hazard Analysis (FHA), Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA), Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), Common Cause Analysis (CCA), Particular Risk Analysis (PRA), and Zonal Safety Analysis (ZSA) and other structured safety methods.
Strong knowledge of aircraft and system functions, interfaces, and component-level failure modes; skilled in architecture analysis and functional decomposition.

Familiarity with PSCPs, compliance verification checklists, and ICA flow-down implementation.
Experience defining, tracking, and validating DAL levels for hardware and software.
Demonstrated ability to recognize safety risks in design and propose effective, certifiable mitigations.
Strong leadership skills with the ability to mentor, influence, and collaborate with internal design teams and external suppliers.

Preferred Experience:

Proficiency with MBSE tools such as Siemens Polarion, ANSYS Medini, and ANSYS SCADE.
Familiarity with Agile development and Jira sprint methodology.
Experience with safety planning and continuous improvement of company SSA processes.
Education:

Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Aerospace, Systems Engineering, or related technical field. Experience will be considered in lieu of education.
Communication: Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively present and document technical safety information.

Team Player: Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment, demonstrating strong interpersonal skills.
