Terms and Abbreviations

Many of the jobs posted on our website come from the JobLines section of our print magazine, where available space is a problem. We, therefore, abbreviate many words and terms. Because JobLines are automatically transferred to our online database, those terms and abbreviations are posted online. The following standard abbreviations and terms are used in our online jobs database:

ASAP: As soon as possible
Contr-Dir: Assignment begins on a contract basis. It can become a direct position.
DOE: Depends upon experience (or Department of Energy, when referring to security clearances)
EBI: Applicants selected will be subject to a government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information
EOE/AA: M/F/D/V: Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer: Male/Female/Disabled/Veteran
Immed: Immediate
Indef: Indefinite. Expected duration of an assignment is unknown; probably relatively long term.
LT: Long term. Expected assignment duration 6-12 months.
Negot: The rate is negotiable. A rate range may have been determined, but your rate is to be negotiated.
Ongoing: The client expects to have openings for this discipline on an ongoing basis.
Open: The rate for this assignment has not yet been set.
Poss: Possible. Normally refers to the availability of overtime or per diem.
Prob: Probable. Normally refers to the availability of overtime or per diem.
Rate: Example -- 16-30 means the assignment will pay from $16 to $30/hour, depending upon experience.
Split: Contract staffing firm would be willing to split out a portion of your hourly rate into per diem (if you meet IRS requirements to qualify for per diem on this assignment).
ST: Short term. Expected assignment duration under 6 months.
StTm/OT: Straight time for overtime.
TBD: To be determined.
VLT: Very long term. Expected assignment duration over 12 months.
