NASA chooses two proposals to study interplanetary space —
NASA has chosen two proposals to study small satellite technologies to develop
improved models to forecast space weather events. According to NASA, the
proposals will improve science observations in deep space. The proposals were
selected based on potential technology and science value, and the feasibility
of development plans. The two proposals for NASA’s demonstrations are Science-Enabling Technologies for Heliophysics (SETH) and
Solar Cruiser. Both support NASA's heliophysics program which aims to provide a
better understanding on the nature of space throughout the solar system, how it
adapts to a constant flow of energy and particles from the Sun, and how it
interrelates with planetary atmospheres. Upon completion of the study period,
one of the proposals will be chosen to launch as a secondary payload with NASA’s interstellar mapping and acceleration probe (IMAP) spacecraft in October 2024.
Virgin Australia debuts split scimitar winglets on Boeing aircraft —
Virgin Australia has become the first airline in the country to install split
scimitar winglets on its Boeing 737-800 aircraft. The winglet is an Aviation
Partners Boeing (APB) product and retrofit of the existing blended winglets. It
offers benefits such as fuel savings and carbon emissions reductions. APB has
secured orders exceeding 2,200 systems since the launch of the split scimitar
winglets program for the Boeing next-generation 737. More than 1,200 aircraft
are currently operating with this new technology. The company is a
Seattle-based joint venture comprising Aviation Partners and Boeing.
