BUG ALERT USING INTERNET EXPLORER AND WORD 2000

NOTE: If you already have Word 2000 SR-1 then your Word is already patched and should be safe to use. Versions of Word earlier than Word 2000 are not subject to this bug.

Upon upgrading our server software, we have become aware of a bug in Word 2000 that causes it to hang and, on some systems, lock up the computer when Explorer downloads a .DOC file from the web.

We are working hard to find a solution to the problem. In the meantime, there are a couple of workarounds:

  1. Upgrade Word 2000: Microsoft has released a maintenance patch that can be downloaded and installed from the web. To access it, Go Here and follow the instructions. You will need your Microsoft Office CD to install the update.
  2. Download to your hard disk: Instead of left-clicking the " formatted" link, right-click it instead and choose "Save target as" from the context menu. Save the resume to your hard disk and you will then be able to open it normally.
  3. Use Netscape Navigator instead. Netscape is able to launch Word 2000 correctly.

If you DO get hung up, do the following:

  1. Press Ctrl/Alt/Del to activate the Task Manager
  2. Scroll the menu to Windword. Click on Winword. Click the Okay button.
  3. Wait a few seconds. The "Application not responding" dialog will appear. Choose to end task. Explorer should now "unlock" itself.

We apologize for this problem. Unfortunately, it is not our creation. We have no wish to cause our advertisers any inconvenience so we will continue to search for a general solution. Unfortunately, upgrading your Word 2000 may well be the only real solution.
